Our village is only 5 minutes from the Al(M) and the A66 which makes it ideally suited for getting North/South and East/West.
THE AREA is wonderful for those interested in walking or touring. RICHMOND, the gateway to the YORKSHIRE DALES and Herriot Country is only 8 miles away. The North Yorkshire Moors, the East Coast and the Lake District are less than an hour away. There are stately homes, abbeys, priories and the cathedrals of YORK, DURHAM and RIPON within easy drive. We provide books, brochures and advice on where to visit, eat and/or walk. There are unspoilt beaches, castles, museums, and the most beautiful countryside in Britain. Only 30 minutes away is the sea with the fishing ports of STAITHES and WHITBY, and the holiday resorts of REDCAR and SCARBOROUGH. There is easy access to the majestic YORKSHIRE MOORS and DALES. The village is within 2 miles of the motorway North and South and within 3 miles of the A66 which is the main route to the world famous ENGLISH LAKE DISTRICT (1 hour). NORTHUMBRIA (40 minutes) and SCOTLAND (2 hours) and the ancient cities of YORK (1 hour), with its Minster and Castles and DURHAM (45 minutes), with its magnificent Cathedral are all easily reached. THE VILLAGE is quiet and picturesque with a large green, a village Post Office, doctor's surgery, pub/restaurant, stream, and friendly people. People with whom we have exchanged have said it is "a typical idyllic English village". It is full of historical buildings. In August a week long gymkhana and fair, celebrating the village's 700 year old charter, takes place on the green surrounding our house. The villagers are friendly and welcoming and are always available for advice and hospitality. Our previous exchange families spent almost all of their time enjoying the village itself. The green is an extremely safe place for children to play. The village is in the centre of attractive countryside and there are facilities for every type of sport: walking, climbing, horse riding, sailing, swimming, golf and tennis. The Dolphin Centre at DARLINGTON (15 mins) is one of the biggest indoor Sports Centres and has an international swimming pool. For shopping there is the local Post Office and then the local picturesque market towns of DARLINGTON(15 minutes), which has four big supermarkets, RICHMOND (15 minutes) and BARNARD CASTLE (30 minutes). For luxury shopping there is the New Metro Centre - said to be the biggest shopping centre in Europe only a 40 minute drive away. It is an area rich in contrast and interest. THE HOUSE is over 300 years old and has been sympathetically modernised. It is full of old pine and oak furniture whilst having all modern conveniences. It stands on one of the biggest village greens in England. It has a walled garden with comfortable patio, stables and various outhouses. Upstairs the house has 3 bed-rooms, one with a wash basin, a bathroom with shower and toilet. There is a fully equipped kitchen, with dish-washer, clothes-washer, freezer, refrigerator, cooker and microwave. There is a separate dining room with an Aga, a sitting room and a further bedroom/study downstairs. There is a downstairs toilet with hand basin. We have two colour televisions, a video recorder, hi-fi, three telephones, two computers, many children's games, toys and books. There are bicycles available.
THE PEOPLE: Mary, age 48, is a teacher in a special school for children with learning difficulties. Ray, age 60, is retired from lecturing at New College Durham, and now writes books to help adults gain access to Universities (you can see his web-site at www.http://homepages.which.net/~ray.baxter/). Our 4 boys are now grown up and don't usually come on holiday with us. Becky, aged 14, attends Richmond School and plays the clarinet. She is interested in music and horse riding and sport, hockey, basket-ball and tennis.
We are interested in swapping our house usually in school holidays and at weekends.
